The genus Taxithelium (Bryopsida, Sematophyllaceae) in Australia

Abstract

In our review of the genus Taxithelium in Australia, the following six species are recognised: Taxithelium. instratum (Brid.) Broth., T. kerianum (Broth.) Broth., T. merrillii Broth., T. muscicolum (Broth.) B.C.Tan, H.P.Ramsay & W.B.Schofield, T. nepalense (Schwägr.) Broth. and T. planum (Brid.) Mitt. Some names listed under Taxithelium in Streimann & Curnow (1989) have been reduced to synonyms or transferred to other genera, e.g. T. novae-valesiae (Broth) Broth., T. papillatum (Harv.) Broth., T. trachychaetum (F.Muell.) Paris and Twattsii Broth. The Australian records of T. petrophilum Williams are identified as T. instratum (Brid.) Broth., while those of Taxithelium selenithecium (Müll. Hal.) Paris in Bartram (1952) fit into Taxithelium planum.
