Abstract

Monthly and annual rainfall data for 63 recording stations in and adjacent to the upper Murrumbidgee River valley catchment area are analysed. A pattern analysis of median monthly rainfalls is compared with an isohyet map, and relationships between altitude and rainfall zones are described. An hierarchical agglomerative classificatory program was used to carry out the pattern analysis.

A technique for estimating temperature has been devised, and tank evaporation and monthly temperatures calculated for each station. A simple moisture balance and growth index is used to assess the effect of rainfall and evaporation on soil moisture availability and that of temperature on plant growth at each centre. These results are also classified by means of the pattern analysis program.

The integration of elements and the use of pattern analysis gives an objective and easily interpreted classification of the agricultural climatology of the area.
