Sheau Wei Chien obtained her B.Sc. from Murdoch University, Western Australia, and joined Hor’s group at NUS in 2001. She is currently a Research Assistant with an interest in organometallic synthesis. In 2009, she received the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Science Mentorship Programme of NUS and Ministry of Education. She is the first author of the review on 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene in Ferrocene: Ligands, Materials & Biomolecules.

Swee Kuan Yen was born in Penang, Malaysia, in 1979. She obtained her B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Technology of Malaysia (Malaysia). She completed a Ph.D. study from 2004 to 2009 on metal complexes of N,S-heterocyclic carbenes under the advisory of Hor and Huynh at NUS. Her awards include the poster prizes at the 9th International Symposium for Chinese Organic Chemists and 6th International Symposium for Chinese Inorganic Chemists (December 2006) and the International Conference on Green and Sustainable Chemistry (March 2009). She was a visiting scholar at Cavell’s laboratory at Cardiff University (UK). She is currently a Research Fellow at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering of NUS.

Abstract

This Review describes an important subclass of N-heterocyclic carbene complexes with thiazol-2-ylidenes ligands with only one exocyclic substituent on the thiazole ring. It highlights the synthetic, structural, and catalytic properties of these rapidly emerging complexes.
