The System ABXY in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Abstract

The 4 x 4 secular determinant that arises in the quantum mechanical treatment of the system ABXY in N.M.R. spectroscopy can be solved exactly under one of three limiting conditions. A close approximate extension of one of these allows the general ABXY spectrum to be analysed. The exact solution for J_XY = 0 is applied to the pyridine-ring protons of nicotine.
