Abstract

The mode of reduction of o-, m-, and p-nitrophenols in the presence and absence of inhibitors using the combined techniques of d.c, and sine-wave polarography is discussed. The nitrophenol molecule is reduced in the adsorbed state at the mercury surface in a stepwise process. The transfer of the first electron is shown to be reversible and the mechanism of the initial electrochemical reaction is discussed.
