Abstract

A study of the zinc gluconate system has shown that, in solutions of pH <6, one, two or four gluconate ions can be coordinated to the metal ion. Above pH 6 a gel is formed [formula Zn2(glH4)(OH)3,xH2O, pKsp'28]; this slowly transforms into Zn(OH)2 at pH >7. Formation of soluble zincates occurs at pH >10. Two solid compounds [Zn(glH4)2 3H2O and Zn2(glH3)(OH)2] have been isolated and subjected to spectral and thermal examination.
