Effect of Previous Water Stress on Ion Uptake and Transport in Barley Seedlings

Abstract

Measurements of ion transport through roots and ion uptake into roots were made following a brief period of water stress induced by wilting in air. The basic processes of photosynthesis, respiration and protein sinthesis did not appear to be affected by this treatment, and uptake of ⁸⁶Rb and L-leucine to the roots was not reduced. However, transport of ⁸⁶Rb and L-leucine from root to shoot wasinhibited. Thus the response of the plants to water stress resembles the response to inhibitors of protein synthesis and to abscisic acid, which has been found to be produced in plants subject to water stress.
