Thiabendazole to reduce rotting in Packham's Triumph pears during storage and marketing

Abstract

Packham's Triumph pears were inoculated with Penicillium expansum either before or .after storage at 32°F. Four to eight hours after inoculation the pears were dipped in a commercial anthelmintic formulation of thiabendazole ('Thibenzole') or in other fungicides. Thiabendazole significantly reduced rotting in ripened fruit and did not leave a visible residue. Other fungicidal treatments were ineffective or caused severe injury.
