Plant roots have many different functions such as anchoring the above-grown aerial structures (shoots), uptake of water and nutrients, storage of carbon and nutrients, interaction with rhizosphere microbiota and provision of soil-based nanosensors, by which aerial tissues rely on to gauge their growth and productivity. However, there are still many gaps in our understanding how plant root systems, the ‘hidden half of plants’, function and respond to environmental variability. This special issue of Functional Plant Biology helps fill some of those gaps by investigating plant root biology, architecture, anatomy, genetics, physiology and biochemistry.
