Basic counting is a core and central skill that young children need to learn. The challenge was to create a fun and systematic approach to learning to count. Number trains is a very colourful and engaging way to teach this key skill.

Number trains combines the fun of playing with a virtual train set, and being set a task of making the chain of number sequences. The student starts out at a very basic level with numbers under 10, and then is progressively presented with more challenging tasks including larger numbers, dice patterns and MAB blocks, and skip counting. The instructions are also featured in voice-over audio to help young children that are not yet able to read.

Students
“Liked getting the numbers right. The trains moved.”

“Really good; really hard at Level 5. I liked the background.”

“You don't have to start from 0 – there are levels. I liked it being trains.”

“(I liked) the way they read the instructions, the way the train picked up the carriages.”

Teachers
“(They) found this task very enjoyable. He was totally engaged for the whole time."
