Australia's external territories range from the tropics to the sub-Antarctic. In the Indian Ocean they consist of Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Ashmore Reefs; in the Coral Sea, a range of islands and cays; and in the sub-Antarctic region, Macquarie and Heard Islands. For each island or island group there is an introduction to the geography, physical features, climate, vegetation and history of human usage. There is a checklist of the species recorded for the island, followed by a key to the families present there. The species are described in a single sequence.
"A real strength of the book is the conciseness and quality of the species descriptions combined with the modern taxonomy and nomenclature." EK Cameron, Auckland Institute & Museum
