This report discusses the concept of sustainable agriculture, identifies a range of current practices and farming systems which promote sustainability, and suggests some important requirements for a more widespread adoption of such farming pracitces.

The main resource management issues and problems in Australian agriculture are surveyed and examined regionally on the basis of a provisional agro-ecological map developed for the purpose.

While the report concentrates on the role of governments in promoting sustainability, a strong theme is the need to recognise the importance of sustainability to the farm business itself and the key role to be played by effective farm planning and management in achieving more sustainable agriculture. This will be a valuable report for administrators and policy makers and people in all aspects of agribusiness.
