The Mammals of Australia provides an account of every species of native mammal known to have existed in Australia since European settlement, 389 species in total. Beautifully illustrated with full colour photographs, each species account includes a detailed description of the animal and its behaviour, a distribution map and a fact box that gives size, identification features, synonyms and alternative common names, subspecies, conservation status and abundance.
The third edition of this historic publication includes an additional 91 species accounts— including, for the first time, all the whales and dolphins that occur in Australian territorial waters— along with more than 200 new photographs. All species accounts from the previous edition have been revised and updated where necessary, and all maps have been individually updated by species authors, then reviewed by a panel of experts to most accurately reflect current distributions.
The result of many years of intensive research, The Mammals of Australia has been written by more than 240 authors, all acknowledged experts who have worked in the field with the species they describe. Written in an accessible style, the book surveys the rich and varied world of Australia’s mammals, from the well-known platypus and koala to the lesser known pygmy-possums, bats and carnivorous marsupials; the seals and sea lions; whales and dolphins; and introduced animals such as the rabbit, camel and deer.
