The aim of this book is to help students, agriculturalists, other scientists and anyone else interested in vegetation to identify the many grasses growing in New South Wales. Although it is not a taxonomic revision, the book does contain much information of value to professional botanists. We have collected relevant information on the grasses of the State from a variety of sources and supplemented it with original observations. In this way we hope to provide many more people with access to data on grass morphology and distribution as well as to a variety of keys for the identification of unknown specimens.

The introductory material is designed to inform readers of the importance to man of the grass family (Poaceae) and to provide basic information, in simple terms, on specimen examination and grass morphology. How to use the keys in identifying plants is explained in non-technical language, and there is a section on botanical nomenclature for those unfamiliar with taxonomy. Where possible, illustrations are used to aid description and instruction. These sections of the book should meet a need for clear and accurate instruction so that interested people can acquire the skills necessary to identify grasses without having to resort to specialist services for other than very difficult specimens. For those who are interested, there are also sections on the classification and distribution of Poaceae.

Please note that this book is spiral-bound.
