The bioregion of Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea possesses a unique natural heritage stretching back over 50 million years since the break-up of the great southern continent of Gondwana. The South Australian Museum focuses on enhancing a general knowledge of this extraordinary legacy by encouraging photography of the region's nature and wilderness, and promoting an annual competition to find the Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year.

Australasian Nature Photography: ANZANG Sixth Collection presents more than 150 of the finest photographs submitted to the competition. Each photograph is accompanied by technical information as well as anecdotes about how the picture was taken, which will stimulate yet further interest in the flora and fauna and their conservation in the region.

Nick Moir from New South Wales is the Overall Winner for the 2009 ANZANG Nature Photography Competition with his evocative image Temora bushfire. Prizes were awarded in 11 other categories, including the Portfolio Prize for the photographer who submits the best of six or more images. This year, the Portfolio Prize winner is Justin Gilligan from New South Wales. Winning and commended photographs from the competition will be on display at the South Australian Museum from 2 October to 22 November 2009.

"This is a beautiful book of wonderful images, an inspiration to all the wannabes who own cameras."
Anne Morton, The Victorian Naturalist, December 2010

"The photography is stunning, the ultimate coffee table book. The beauty and variety of nature is a visual treat, and we would not be able to see many of these subjects without spending the many hours that the photographers have spent to get that perfect shot."
Linnaean Society of NSW Newsletter, No 136, July 2010, p.4

"This superb collection lets us explore the wildlife of Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea in tellingly captured moments."
Wildlife Australia Magazine, Autumn 2010

"To say that the reproductions in the book are really magnificent is not an understatement."
Tim Newbery, Image, January/February 2010

"This wonderful collection of photographs will appeal to anyone remotely interested in the natural world."
Patricia Gurry, WA Naturalist News, March 2010

"This is not a story book, but a collection of outstanding images from the region in which we live, taken by some of the world’s best nature and landscape photographers. It is a book which I will add to my library and I recommend it to nature and landscape photography enthusiasts."
Bob Young, The Bird Observer, December 2009

ANZANG Nature was founded by Perth surgeon Dr Stuart Miller in 2003, to encourage nature photography and assist conservation in the Australasian region. While the competition has been passed on to the South Australian Museum, Stuart remains actively involved as its patron. The South Australian Museum enjoys an international reputation for the size and representation of its collections, as well as the breadth and quality of its scientific research.
