This special issue contains the Proceedings of the 36th Annual Conference of the International Embryo Transfer Society held 9–12 January 2010 in Códoba, Argentina. It comprises 11 review articles and 449 abstracts of work presented at the meeting, which was organised under the theme ‘Back to the Basics, from the Bench to the Field’. The papers cover a broad range of topics, including regulation of follicular and oocyte development, embryo manipulation and managing environmental conditions in the lab and field, and issues in production of pregnancies and live offspring, such as embryo transfer recipient synchronisation, pregnancy recognition and delivery of cloned offspring. Together they constitute an invaluable reference for researchers in the fields of gamete, embryo and fetal development.
