With the increasing demand for new and improved pastures and high protein food crops, research is seeking to develop better strains of nodulated legumes both for temperate and tropical agriculture.
The nodulation performance of various strains of soil bacteria vary in relation to factors such as soil temperature, soil acidity and the nature of soil nutrients. At the centre of this program is the need to better understand the unique symbiotic relationship that exists between the host legume and its nodule bacteria.
