This issue of Functional Plant Biology is dedicated to the scientific basis of plant phenotyping, covering part of the work presented at the 2nd International Plant Phenotyping Symposium, held in Jülich, Germany, September 2011. The meeting focused on several aspects of plant phenotyping including novel sensors, imaging of functional and structural plant traits, experimental and data analysis pipelines as well as data management.
