| ||This Special Issue of Animal Production Science brings together a selection of the invited research papers that were presented at the 5th Australasian Dairy Science Symposium in Melbourne, 13-15 November 2012. The conference was a forum for leading scientists from Australia and New Zealand to review and to present research findings from their recent scientific endeavours. Key themes covered in the Special Issue are: (i) the challenges and opportunities for dairying in Australia and New Zealand, (ii) recent advances in animal biotechnology, (iii) future technologies to improve reproductive performance, (iv) animal welfare and well being, (v) transition cow management, (vi) opportunities to manipulate the feedbase, (vii) precision technologies for the dairy industry and (viii) performance, return and risk for dairy systems.
