Maluridae: Insights from a Model System
Emu Special Issue, Volume 113, Number 3
Katherine L. Buchanan
Fairy-wrens and their relatives (Maluridae) are now established as model organisms for studies of evolutionary ecology. Some species are an evolutionary paradox as they maintain cooperative breeding, despite extraordinarily high rates of cuckoldry. There is great diversity within the family, with some species prone to interspecific nest parasitism. This special issue reviews the fundamental contribution this group of birds has made to our understanding of avian evolutionary processes.
