Abstract

The contents of galls formed by Anguina woodi in Ehrharta villosa var. villosa from South Africa were examined. Bacterial colonisation was evident in six of 48 galls and inhibited nematode development, but did not prevent it in all cases. Galls without evident bacterial colonisation contained a mean of three adults and ~400 eggs and/or second stage juveniles, with these stages all surviving anhydrobiotically. The adult sex ratio was close to 1:1. Aspects of the reproductive and survival biology of A. woodi appear distinct from those of the closely related A. australis.
