The Medicinal Chemistry Collection

Australian Journal of Chemistry is approaching its eighth decade of publishing key work across many spheres of chemistry, both national and international. As the current co-editors-in-chief, we are delighted to introduce this special virtual issue of the journal that highlights a selection of the finest recent articles in medicinal chemistry. The subject itself is diverse and principally addresses drug discovery including of natural products and new methodologies for the synthesis of bioactive compounds to the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of new drugs. In this collection of ten articles from recent issues of the journal, the breadth and excellence of Australasian medicinal chemistry is highlighted. It ranges from the preparation of plant-derived cyclic peptides as drug design scaffolds, the development of β-, γ-, or δ-thiol ligation auxiliaries of the ligation–desulfurization reactions, isolation of novel cytotoxic terpenes from the Australian nudibranch Goniobranchus splendidus to ring-closing metathesis and CuI-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition for the preparation of macrocycles, and the synthesis of the naturally occurring cyclic peptide lassomycin. We are proud to also highlight the significant contributions to medicinal chemistry research made by several outstanding women researchers. We hope you enjoy this special issue as much as we do!

70 Years of Australian Journal of Chemistry: A Retrospective

Australian Journal of Chemistry was established in 1948, and consisted of four issues annually, published under the title Australian Journal of Scientific Research. Very quickly, the volume of papers received was so great, including published papers in the fields of both chemistry and physics, and the journal split into two distinct publications in 1953: Australian Journal of Chemistry and Australian Journal of Physics.

Submissions continued to grow and today Australian Journal of Chemistry publishes 12 issues each year. Its vision continues to be to showcase the best chemical science from Australasia to the rest of the world, along with publishing important international contributions. In 2018, this journal celebrated 70 years of publication, and in 2019, although somewhat belatedly, we celebrate this significant milestone with this virtual issue – a free online collection of papers showcasing aspects of this vision.

The selection of the papers was largely subjective, being based initially on the consensus opinions of the editors, who were asked to select papers of reflecting the breadth and quality of science published in Australian Journal of Chemistry by Australian scientists over the last seven decades. We were informed by hard data (citations and downloads), but we also chose papers that reflect other criteria, such as landmarks in important aspects of chemical science; recognition of an influential individual; gender diversity; and simply to reflect the breadth of the journal’s output.

Nobel Laureates

Australian Journal of Chemistry is proud to have published the works of a number of Nobel prize winners of chemistry. This virtual issue collects the articles authored by these Nobel prize winners.
