Fire and the climate

This task enables students to investigate the history of fire and predict changes as a result of a changing climate.

Students develop a fire history matrix for their state or territory. Students will need access to official government or authority websites, located in the References section, to collect a range of information about the history of fire using headings including:

  • Fire type – crown or ground
  • Frequency and Intensity
  • Spatial pattern – size, location
  • Impact – humans, animals, plants, economic

Students discuss and contribute to a class document, Climate Change – Future Impact Assessment for Fire, using key ideas relating to increased temperature and changing weather patterns such as reduced or increased rainfall.

Students write an article about the potential changes for their state or territory's fire situation as a result of climate change. The report should provide evidence to justify their point of view.
