Winner of the 2006 Whitley Award for Best Conservation Resource

This completely updated edition gives the latest listings on conservation status for all known Australian amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. It indicates each species’ status on a state-by-state basis and also gives details for subspecies. Additionally, it provides a ‘one-stop-shop’ listing of the correct species names for all Australian vertebrates.

It will be an indispensable reference tool and guide for all persons working with and publishing on Australia’s vertebrate fauna, particularly those dealing in legal matters and environmental inventory and management programs.

Amendments:
Since publication, some information has been updated or corrected in the CSIRO List of Australian Vertebrates. A list of the amendments and revised pages are available as a pdf download in the Features tab.

A list of the amendments and revised pages are available here as a pdf download.

  • now includes all currently recognised and named sub-species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
  • includes 39 newly described species, along with 83 subspecies or junior synonyms of previously described taxa that have been elevated to species status since the first edition.
  • fully updated, listing the latest gazetted conservation status for all species and sub-species, Australia-wide.
  • lists the code number of each species and subspecies in the ABRS Census of Australian Vertebrate Species (CAVS). Many new numbers are included and problems associated with previous ABRS numbers have been addressed.
  • provides accurate names and up-to-date taxonomy for all species, now including date of description for nomenclatural authorities.
  • now gives distributional information for commonwealth territories and for vagrant and accidental bird records.
  • includes new tables of vagrant and accidental mammal records, native vertebrate species introduced to parts of Australia and its territories in which they do not naturally occur, and introduced foreign species once established but now extinct in Australia and its territories.
  • now indicates species or subspecies that occur or have occurred in a State or Territory but are not considered a regular component of the fauna of that State or Territory.
