Abstract

Penetration of Ophiobolus graminis (Sacc.) through the root cell walls of young wheat seedlings mayor may not result in the formation of lignitubers (Fellows 1928). Lignitubers are developed by the host cell on the iIUler side of the wall of the cells entered. In successful cell-wall penetration each infection hypha passes through the peg, becoming constricted in so doing. The root cortex is colonized, then the endodermis is penetrated, and the vascular tissue colonized. Lignitubers may still be formed in the deeper cortex and xylem tissue but following massive infection cell walls are disintegrated and the hypha penetrates the cells directly (Fellows 1928; Ludtke 1931).
