Abstract

Several years ago, IBM established its Smarter Planet vision: to bring a new level of intelligence to how the world works—to how every person, business, organisation, government, natural system and man-made system interacts. Mr Haake will present a case study from our collaboration with Statoil on integrated operations.

Statoil defines integrated operations (IO) as: collaboration across disciplines, companies, organisational and geographical boundaries—made possible by real-time data and new work processes—to reach safer and better decisions faster. To help identify the methods, technologies and work processes necessary to integrate its operations, Statoil appointed a research and development consortium consisting of ABB, IBM, SKF and Aker Kvaerner. The Statoil TAIL IO project was aimed at improving operations at fields approaching the end of their life-spans—the stage where production rate is declining, the facilities are ageing, and the cost of operation is high.

The result is a set of integrated operations solutions based on industry standards that offer great promise.

The IBM annual research and development budget is nearly $6 Billion. IBM is also an active member and participant in the development and leadership of multiple petroleum industry standards bodies: Mimosa and Open Operations & Maintenance Integrated Operations of the High North (IOHN) Energistics, coordinating WITSML and PRODML.

David Haake is oil and gas industry solutions executive for Australia, having formerly run the IBM US Chemicals and Petroleum Industry Solutions team. He is an accomplished business consultant with extensive experience in serving the global oil and gas industry around business process transformation, application software and IT infrastructure, as well as process automation.

He is responsible for the development and support of industry-specific solutions for IBM clients. Core competencies include: broad and deep knowledge of oil and gas industry application software; business and IT strategy alignment, business process re-engineering, IT governance and IT outsourcing. Published thought leader on collaboration/knowledge management, asset life-cycle management, LNG-related topics and ERP/MES integration.

In 2010, IBM established its sixth global Natural Resources Solutions Centre in Perth, and its 10th worldwide IBM Research Lab in Melbourne this year, to foster industry collaboration in Australia. Mr Haake coordinates the investments of these organisations with key clients/prospects to help address the most challenging issues of the day.

David has an MBA (energy finance) from Denver University, a BSc (engineering management) from the University of Missouri, Rolla, and IBM executive sponsor for Southern Methodist University,
