The influence of an intelligent operations philosophy on design and operation of remote large-scale oil and gas developments in Australia*

Abstract

Today's large-scale oil and gas developments are often characterised by reserves in increased water depths, increased distance from shore and remoteness from existing infrastructure. The use of an intelligent operations philosophy, to create a company capability to address these challenges, has identified significant opportunities for:

  1. Enhancing health, safety and environmental performance, reserves recovery, production performance; and,

  2. Attracting, developing and retaining people.

To deliver these benefits, a comprehensive approach to building this capability is required—systematically addressing people, process, organisation, physical environment and technology at each stage of the project. This paper illustrates the development of such an approach in a practical Australian context for forthcoming oil and gas developments.

David has 20 years of oilfield experience, in Australia, the UK, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Norway, USA, Africa and the Middle East. His background includes lead roles in mechanical, construction, planning and systems engineering. He has particular expertise in integrated operations for drilling, subsurface and production, and a proven track record in consulting assessments which have identified billions of dollars of savings for his clients across the world. His clients includes Woodside, Santos, BP (the UK, Indonesia, Azerbaijan and Angola), Shell International, Exxon and ADCO.

He is the author of several publications in the area including SPE papers and a book for Shell. David founded Integrated Energy Pty Ltd to enable safer, more valuable operations and projects, which are better for the people working on them and the environment. The team members of the Integrated Energy Alliance have been pioneers in integrated operations since its inception—working with most of the leading companies on their flagship projects in Norway, the UK, Azerbaijan, Angola, Indonesia and more than 50 such projects across the world.

James has worked in the oil and gas industry in Australia, the UK, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands, primarily in the areas of mechanical design, project management, subsea operations and offshore construction. He completed a management leadership program with Pratt & Whitney jet engines, then entered internal consulting, business development and strategy roles for United Technologies Corporation in the USA.

On moving to the UK, he managed the development of an advanced prototype electric vehicle based on the BMW Mini, before joining Integrated Energy as principal consultant, supporting Santos and Woodside on several projects. He holds a first class degree in mechanical engineering from the UWA and an MBA from INSEAD in France. He is a UK Chartered Engineer.
