Insights into the depositional setting for the Gippsland Basin from modern basin-wide 3D datasets

Angus Goody graduated from the Australian National University in 1991 with a BSc (Hons) in geology and geophysics. He joined BHP Petroleum in 1992 as a geophysicist and worked at BHP Petroleum for 30 years on a variety of exploration, appraisal and development projects out of their Melbourne, London, Houston and Perth offices. He returned to Perth from Houston in 2018, working predominantly on the Gippsland Basin. Since the merger of BHP Petroleum and Woodside in June 2022 he has been in the Australia and Asia Pacific New Ventures Exploration teams in Woodside.



Dr Clare Davies is the Australian Exploration Manager at Woodside Energy since 2022, previously holding a similar position for BHP Petroleum from 2017. With over 20 years in the industry Clare has worked for several majors where the majority of her roles were in Exploration and New Ventures as well as roles in consulting companies leading teams to provide outcrop and data driven interpretations to support industry exploration teams. Through these roles Clare’s desire to fully understand basin analysis with a multitude of different datasets has continued to develop and has driven an interest in the application of paleo-drainage, sediment input and provenance analysis as tools to better understand reservoir development.



Paul Rheinberg graduated from Southampton University in 1998 with a BSc (Hons) in Geology. That same year he joined Arthur Andersen’s Petroleum Services Group, based in London and Singapore, where he undertook analysis and reporting on the upstream oil and gas industry in Australasia, Indonesia and North West Europe. In 2003 he moved to IHS, where he was the Regional Manager for Australasia, leading a team charged with data sourcing, scouting and control of all reporting on aspects of the oil and gas industry in Australasia for IHS and its global subsidiaries. Since 2012 he has worked at Fugro Multi Client Services, based in Perth, before its merger with CGG. In this role, he is responsible for identifying and developing new multi-client seismic surveys throughout Australasia as well as the sales and marketing of CGG’s existing multi-client library.

Abstract

The Gippsland Basin is a prolific hydrocarbon basin, with gas and oil initially discovered in the Barracouta (1965) and Kingfish (1967) fields. Historically the basin was covered with a patchwork of legacy 3D seismic surveys acquired from 1980 to mid-2000s, shot with old technology resulting in sub-optimal imaging of the subsurface. CGG reprocessed 10,190 km2 of legacy 3D data as part of their ReGeneration project in 2018 and in 2020 acquired 8751 km2 of long offset, deep tow and undershot seismic data. With these data sets, Woodside has been able to extract images of the regional depositional systems through the basin’s evolution. These observations range in scale from interpretation of individual channels and channel belts to the distribution of the major shoreface systems and marine fans.
