Abstract

The development of Australia’s abundant onshore natural gas resources can only be achieved through a constructive partnership between the industry, government, landholders and the broader community. Santos’ industry leadership stems from decades of respectful relationships with landholders, responsible stewardship of the environment and water resources and enduring, mutually beneficial partnerships with communities. These constructive relationships are the foundation of our industry and contribute to our social license to operate, but as we enter new communities the increasing public discussion of the natural gas industry means a real effort is required to establish a genuine, responsive dialogue with a wide range of stakeholders. Establishing these relationships is increasingly complicated by activist groups opposed to the industry and determined to disrupt that dialogue. But with the safe, sustainable development of reliable, affordable energy supplies essential to Australia’s economic well-being and broader standard of living, this is an area where the industry cannot afford to fail.

James Baulderstone is responsible for Santos’s activities in Eastern Australia and unconventional business across Australia. This includes the exploration, production, development and commercialisation of the company’s oil and gas resources in central Australia, NSW and offshore Victoria.

James also oversees Santos’ Public Affairs team, leading the company’s engagement with communities and governments.

James joined Santos in 2007 as General Counsel and Company Secretary after previously holding similar roles at Mayne Group and BlueScope Steel. James has 25 years of extensive legal, commercial and business development experience.
