Abstract

This paper is a compilation of information provided by state and territory jurisdictions about onshore acreage and its availability for petroleum exploration in 2022. Most Australian state and territory governments continue to research and promote petroleum prospectivity and support exploration opportunities. Current and future policy directions including government initiatives and strategies to support and increase petroleum exploration opportunities are described, particularly for jurisdictions where no or limited acreage releases are available this year. Increased global energy demand, supply chain issues and resulting commodity price increases present challenges for domestic users and governments alike as global economies bounce back from the forced slow-down of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time of writing, the conflict in Europe brings additional supply chain challenges.

Keywords: coal seam gas, CSG, exploration, framework, gas, geoscience, LNG, oil, project, prospectivity, release, state, territory.
