About the Journal

The Australian Energy Producers Journal is published by CSIRO Publishing on behalf of Australian Energy Producers, formerly known as The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA).

The Australian Energy Producers Journal has its roots in the development of the Association. Conceived in the late 1950s by a group of prominent Australian geoscientists, the Australian Petroleum Exploration Association (APEA) was formed in 1960. Part of its brief was to hold an annual conference where technical papers would be presented and then published. The aim was to move the fledgling Australian upstream industry forward. The first volume of the APEA Journal was published in 1961.

As the industry grew and matured the Association – and therefore the journal – changed its name to the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) in 1996. Each year the conference highlights and defines the issues and challenges of upstream petroleum exploration and development on a national and international level. The type of papers presented at the annual conference, and peer-reviewed for publication in The Journal, has also changed. Currently, there is a multidisciplinary approach with a variety of main streams based on the current environment of the Industry. From volume 64, 2024, the Journal will be known as the Australian Energy Producers Journal, in line with the association’s rebrand in September 2023.

To keep the industry up to date with the latest innovations, proceedings from the annual conference are published as a supplement to the Journal, including Extended Abstracts, PESA Reviews, oral and visual presentations, and plenary videos. Conference proceedings (Extended Abstracts and PESA reviews) are published as a supplementary issue (S1) and are not peer-reviewed but are assessed by a member of the Technical Program Committee. Non-peer reviewed content published within supplements in the Australian Energy Producers Journal is clearly marked at the HTML level.

The Australian Energy Producers 2024 Technical and Business Program is proudly sponsored by BP.
