Fully integrated dynamic reservoir and well simulation model: Blacktip gas field case study

Abstract

This paper describes an experience of integrating a dynamic reservoir simulation model with a dynamic well simulation model, resulting in an integrated dynamic model from the reservoir to the surface that enhances reservoir and well surveillance capability for the Blacktip gas field.

Multiphase transient flow simulation is used to support daily well and pipeline operations for the project. The limitation of the standalone well model using a multiphase transient simulation software was its inability to reproduce pressure build up response during shut-ins, and pressure drawdown during start-ups. The fluid inflow from the reservoir to the well bore is modelled using the Inflow Performance Relationship (IPR) and accordingly the transient pressure behaviour near the well bore is not captured. This makes it difficult to estimate an accurate static reservoir pressure during shut-ins, as the predicted pressure instantaneously builds up to reservoir pressure specified in the IPR. The integrated dynamic model overcomes this limitation. The history matching of production intervals including shut-ins and start-ups using the integrated dynamic model along with high frequency data demonstrates that this integrated modelling approach can be used as a reliable surveillance tool to understand dynamic flow conditions from the reservoir to the surface, including liquid loading and unloading scenarios.

The evolution of the history match and subsequent outcomes are discussed in the paper, along with the lessons learnt. Results of a liquid loading and unloading scenario for a gas well are also discussed in the paper.

Ryosuke Yokote (Rio) graduated from Tohoku University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree and in 1995 with a Master of Science degree, both in Resource Engineering. He is a Senior Petroleum Engineer with Eni Australia. He has over 22 years of industry experience spanning operations engineering support for daily production, planning and supervising various offshore well operations (completion clean-up, DST, field start-up, wireline, well intervention, field abandonment, etc.), interface engineering and hands-on production and drilling crew, in Australia, East Timor, Indonesia and Japan. He authored and coauthored several technical papers, ranging from intelligent completions, advanced perforation technique to application of dynamic simulation.

Mohammad Albarzanji graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2009 with a bachelor degree (Honours) in Petroleum Engineering. He commenced work as a Reservoir Engineer with Halliburton’s Centre of Excellence for Reservoir Performance (CERP) in Abu Dhabi UAE, conducting fluid characterisation studies, EOR studies, FDP’s and model conversions for various onshore and offshore mega projects in the Middle East. In late 2011, he joined Schlumberger Carbon services as a Reservoir Engineer, providing modelling support for several CO2 sequestration projects in Australia and abroad. He also provided software training and support for Schlumberger, and was a certified ECLIPSE, MEPO and Petrel RE instructor, delivering multiple courses in Australia. He joined Eni in 2014 as a Reservoir Engineer, and is currently responsible for the reservoir engineering support of the Blacktip and Bayu Undan fields (history matching, forecasting, uncertainty analysis, reserves reporting, etc.).

Yohan Suhardiman graduated from Institut Français du Pétrole School in 2003 with a master degree in Reservoir Engineering. In 2003, he joined Total Indonesia as a Reservoir Engineer working on simulation study for Handil oil field. In 2006, he joined Eni Indonesia where he performed an integrated reservoir study for Bangka, Jau and Gehem gas fields. In 2009, he was assigned to Eni HQ in Milan working for reservoir study department covering Russia, Indonesia, Australia, India and Turkmenistan fields. In 2011 he was posted to Eni Australia in Perth, where he is currently working as a Reservoir Coordinator, leading reservoir and petroleum engineering team.

Andrew Tran graduated from Curtin University with a bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering and also holds a master degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Western Australia. He has been working as a Production Engineer with Schlumberger Australia since 2010. During his time in Schlumberger he has performed projects on well test analysis, production accounting, well workover recognition, and production system optimisation and integrated asset modelling. Before he joined Schlumberger, he was an Asset Engineer with an operating company where he was executing compliance and maintenance projects on hydrocarbon assets based in Western Australia’s North West. Prior to joining the upstream community, Andrew had been working in downstream refining and pharmaceutical operational facilities as a chemical engineer.

Erni Dharma Putra graduated from University of Melbourne in 2003 with a bachelor of Chemical Engineering. Erni is a Senior Flow Assurance Consultant with Schlumberger. She possess more than 10 years of experience in the oil and gas industry with specialisation in flow assurance and background in process engineering. Her key skills are multiphase flow steady-state and dynamic analysis modelling and consultancy work (subsurface/wellbores, flowlines, topsides) using OLGA, PVTSim, Multiflash and Pipesim; process simulation modelling using HYSYS, development of process engineering deliverables and technical process safety work. She has an extensive work experience in various project phases including conceptual design, FEED, execution phase (EPC) and exposure to the offshore exploration and production (operation) environment. In addition, her key roles include teaching OLGA courses and technical supports.

Nelson Rodriguez graduated from Universidad Central de Venezuela in 2001 with a bachelor of Petroleum Engineering, and also holds a Master of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot Watt University. He is currently working as a Principal Production Engineer at Schlumberger with over 16 years of relevant experience in various areas worldwide. He has ample experiences in building Integrated Asset Models for both scopes: long/short-term forecast and steady-state optimisation. His experience also includes implementing automated engineering process (data workflows) towards to Digital Oil Field approach, aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness performing Field/Well Surveillance activities, Integrated Production optimisation tasks (nodal analysis and surface network modelling).
