A Taxonomic Revision of the Genera Phascolostrongylus Canavan, and Oesophagostomoides Schwartz (Nematoda: Trichonematidae) From Wombats.

Abstract

The genera Phascolostrongylus Canavan, 1931, and Oesophagostomoides Schwartz, 1928, are revised and maintained as valid, distinct genera. Phascolostrongylus becomes monotypic with its single species P. turleyi Canavan, 1931, from Vombatus ursinus. The original description of this species does not correspond with the deposited holotype, which is clearly a different nematode. The species is redescribed from the holotype and from new material corresponding with it, and a new name, Oesophagostomoides longispicularis, sp. nov., proposed for Canavan's species. Oesophagostomoides contains three species, the type-species 0. giltneri Schwartz, 1928, from Vombatus ursinus, 0. stirtoni (Mawson, 1955), comb. nov., from Lasiorhinus latifrons, and 0. longispicularis, sp. nov., from Vombatus ursinus, the last species being that originally described under the name, Phascolostrongylus turleyi.
