Reinstatement and revision of Asteromyrtus (Myrtaceae)

Abstract

The generic name Asteromyrrus Schauer is reinstated for a group of species most of which have previously been placed in Melaleuca L. Sinoga S. T. Blake is reduced to the synonymy of Asteromyrtus. The reinstated genus is revised and its generic relationships briefly discussed. One species, A. tranganensis, is described as new and the following new combinations are effected: A. angustifolia (Gaertner) Craven, A. urnhemica (Byrnes) Craven, A. brassii (Byrnes) Craven, A. lysicephala (F. Muell. & F. M. Bail.) Craven, A. magnifica (Specht) Craven, A. symphyocarpa (F. Muell.) Craven.
