Abstract

Sixteen species were assigned to Coptocercus before the current study commenced. This revision includes 36 species, 21 of which are established as new: C. tricolor, C. terminalis, C. javanicus, C. pascoei, C. aruensis, C. sulciscapus, C. pretiosus, C. spinithoracicus, C. weiri, C. matthewsi, C. clarus, C. walkeri, C. multitrichus, C. robustus, C. australis, C. galachrous, C. rotundiguttatus, C. ovaliguttatus, C. shuteae, C. orientalis and C. schneiderae. New synonyms are proposed as follows (senior synonyms last): C. sannio McKeown with C. undulatus (Hope) and C. vittatus Aurivillius with C. assimilis (Hope). A neotype is designated for C. aberrans (Newman). All the 36 valid species are described and figured, and distributions are mapped for 34 species. A key to 36 species is given.
