Charlotte Conn is a Professor of Biophysical Chemistry and a 2017 Vice Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellow in the School of Science, RMIT University. Her research interests focus on the development of advanced nanomaterials using high-throughput experimentation and the use of these self-assembly materials for the delivery of protein and peptide-based drugs, including anti-microbial peptides which are part of the global fight against antibiotic resistance. Charlotte is passionate about diversity and inclusion in STEMM and recently travelled to Antarctica as part of the Homeward Bound global leadership program. Email: charlotte.conn@rmit.edu.au

Dr Anastasios Polyzos completed his doctorial studies in 2005 at La Trobe University and was appointed to Research Fellow at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in the same year. In 2008 he pursued post-doctoral research at University of Cambridge under guidance of Professor Steven V. Ley FRS. In 2011 he returned to Australia and lead the flow chemistry and team at CSIRO. He embarked on his independent research career in 2015 when he was appointed to Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne. His research interests include the development of new methods and enabling technologies for organic synthesis, photocatalysis, C-H activation, and the development of sustainable industrial process chemistry. Welcome to this Rising Stars of Chemistry Special Issue for the Australian Journal of Chemistry. In a first of its kind, we are delighted to present a collection of papers that showcase the high-quality work of internationally recognised Australian and New Zealand researchers in the early stages of their independent careers. This issue is intended to showcase the diversity and strength of research being carried out by tomorrow’s leaders in all fields of the Chemical Sciences. In consultation with the Editorial Board of the journal, we nominated individual researchers recognised by their peers as ‘Rising Stars’, with the potential to influence their respective research fields, not just in Australia but internationally.

This issue of the Australian Journal of Chemistry has resulted in 15 high-quality research articles and reviews that reflect a wide breadth of research within the chemistry community. The work presented here highlights recent advances in theory, experiment and methodology to solve compelling problems in their respective fields.

We hope you enjoy this Rising Stars Special Issue and it is our profound pleasure to introduce our next generation of home-grown leaders in the Chemical Sciences.
