The oxidation of hydrazine by silver(I) oxide

Abstract

At room temperatures, the oxidation of hydrazine solutions by silver(1) oxide proceeds primarily in the solution phase, the rate of reaction being directly related to the concentration of free hydrazine and silver ions present. The reduction of the silver ions is catalysed by a conducting surface, such as a silver film, and it is suggested that the liberation of nitrogen involves the successive formation of several short-lived hydro-nitrogen species. The rate of reaction is influenced also by factors such as pH, particle size, and composition of the solution phase, since these alter either the solubility of the solid or the activity of the silver ions.
