1,6-Addition of t-butylmagnesium chloride to 9,10-phenanthraquinone

Abstract

Reaction between t-butylmagnesium chloride and 9,10-phenanthraquinone takes an unusual course involving 1,6-addition. This leads successively to products based on 3-t-butyl- and 3,6-di-t-butyl-9,10-phenanthraquinone.
