Substituent Effects on the ¹H N.M.R. Spectra of Substituted Benzamides and N-Alkylbenzamides

Abstract

The proton chemical shifts (δ_NH and δ_CH) of 60 substituted benzamides and N-alkylbenzamides and δ_CH of seven substituted N,N-dialkylbenzamides have been reported and compared with sub- stituent effects. The chemical shifts (δ_NH and δ_CH of H3,5) of N-alkylbenzamides correlate well with Hammett σ values. The chemical shift δ_NH also correlates well with the Taft substituent constant E_s. All other chemical shifts are independent of substituent effects.
