Amine Reactions with Bis(thioamides)

Abstract

The reaction between N,N'-ethylenebis(thiobenzamide) and ethylenediamine in the presence of mercuric oxide yielding 2-phenyl-2-imidazoline is shown to proceed in two steps since the intermediate, 2-phenyl-1-thiobenzoyl-2-imidazoline, has been isolated and characterized. An amine exchange reaction involving a bis(thioamide) is reported which is a new variation of the Wallach reaction.
