Abstract

The molecular ion of 2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-1,2-benzazaphosphole oxide undergoes fission of the N-P and P-C bonds in the azaphosphole ring so that C6H5-P=O is lost giving an ion which fragments further to give C8H8N+ (m/z 118). This m/z 118 ion is common to all the compounds studied except those which are not substituted on the nitrogen atom. All the 2,3-dihydro-1H-1,2-benzazaphosphole sulfides lose SH (the oxides do not lose OH); otherwise the 2-phenyl sulfides resemble the 2-phenyl oxides, but the 2-methyl sulfides are quite different from the 2-methyl oxides.
