Abstract

This report provides the first record of lucerne bacterial wilt in Australia. The causal organism, Corynebacterium insidiosum (McCulloch) Jensen, was isolated from typically infected lucerne plants from eastern Gippsland. In pot tests the lucerne cultivars Hunter River and Californian Common proved susceptible, but the cultivars Lahontan, Caliverde, and Buffalo showed considerable resistance. These latter varieties are resistant to the disease in the U.S.A.
