R. J. Clarke studied physical chemistry at the University of Adelaide. Before taking up his present position as senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, he enjoyed periods working at the University of Constance (Germany), University of East Anglia (Norwich, UK), Fritz-Haber-Institute of the Max-Planck-Society (Berlin, Germany), and the Max-Planck-Institute of Biophysics (Frankfurt/Main, Germany). He has also been a visiting fellow at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev (Beer-Sheva, Israel). The major areas of his research have been the biophysical chemistry of biological membranes and ion pumps.
