The possible formation of iron(V) and cobalt(V) in molten sodium nitrite

Abstract

Chemical and magnetic evidence is presented to support the view that the complex anions Fe^VO₄^3- and Co^VO₄^3- are formed when molten sodium nitrite is electrolysed between electrodes of the appropriate metal or when its salts are added to molten nitrite solutions of Na₂O₂. The reflectance spectrum of Co^VO₄^3- has been recorded between 11000 and 26000 cm^-1.
