Pyrimidine N-oxides. I. The synthesis and some reactions of N-hydroxybarbiturates

Abstract

A series of 5,5-disubstituted N-hydroxybarbituric acids has been prepared by direct oxidation of their amino precursors, followed by hydrolysis. The behaviour of the N-hydroxybarbiturates towards alkylating and reducing reagents is reported. The reactions of a representative 5-monosubstituted N-hydroxybarbituric acid indicate that the compounds of this series are chemically distinct from their 5,5- disubstituted homologues.
