Christian Dahmen studied physics at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and graduated in 2003. As a doctoral student in the Nanostructure Optics group in Aachen, he investigated optical and structural properties of noble-metal nanoparticles. His work includes theoretical calculations on ultrafast heat transfer in laser-excited nanoparticles and experimental studies of optical changes during the photochromic transformation of embedded silver nanoparticles. He obtained his doctoral degree in 2006 and currently works as a financial risk consultant in Frankfurt, Germany.



Gero von Plessen obtained an M.Sc. in physics from the University of Dundee, U.K., and a doctoral degree from Marburg University, Germany, under the supervision of Ernst O. Göbel. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow with John F. Ryan at the University of Oxford, before joining the group of Jochen Feldmann at the University of Munich. Since 2001, he has held a professorship in physics at RWTH Aachen University, where he heads the Nanostructure Optics group. His research centres on the optical properties of metal nanostructures.

Abstract

Metallic nanoparticles show a rich optical behaviour because of their strong light absorption and scattering, wide spectral tunability, and interesting optical near-field effects. Research into optical effects of metallic nanoparticles, a field with a long tradition, has been developing rapidly in recent years as a result of progress in nanoparticle fabrication, spectroscopic techniques, and computational methods. This article provides a survey of optical effects of metallic nanoparticles, covering both fundamental phenomena and emerging applications.
